While the island certainly thrives as a mecca for party-loving backpackers, it also offers a seemingly endless array of untouched tropical beaches that appeal to tourists of all kinds. From peaceful Zen Beach to idyllic Secret Beach and the perfect Koh Phangan sunset on Tong Sala, you could spend weeks here enjoying them all. Most travelers don’t have that kind of time though, so the inevitable question arises – which are the best beaches in Koh Phangan you need to add to your itinerary? We visited six of the island’s most popular beaches (plus one hidden gem) and created this power ranking to help you decide.
Quick note: As most tourists stay on the western side of the island, we’ve limited our rankings to those beaches. While beaches like Thong Nai Pan and Bottle Beach often get rave reviews, they’re a bit trickier to get to and often can’t make the cut for a shorter itinerary. If you’ve got more time during your visit to Koh Phangan, we highly recommend checking these out, as they offer a more secluded and romantic experience due to their out-of-the-way nature.

The Best Beaches in Koh Phangan, Thailand
Without further ado, here is our rankings of some of the best beaches in Koh Phangan, Thailand.
While Secret Beach isn’t really a secret, it still tops our list of best beaches in Koh Phangan, Thailand. Why? The vibes here are perfect. It’s busy enough to feel lively without feeling crowded, and big enough that there’s room to spread out while still feeling intimate. There are beautiful rock formations to enhance the view, but swimming here is still great as the ocean floor is sandy and there’s a nice progressive drop-off. Sunbathing is also a ten, with plenty of shady bits as well for when you need a respite. Plus, it has all the amenities you need – a beach bar with good music, a cute little shop for souvenirs and essentials, and a massage stand to deepen your relaxation. If you can only hit one beach during your visit, Koh Phangan’s Secret Beach is the way to go.
Koh Phangan’s Zen Beach is true to its name. This small spit of sand is quiet, and you’ll often find people here meditating or doing yoga. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a fresh coconut and the peaceful sound of the ocean, as the beach bar doesn’t play any music. There’s not as much flat, soft sand for sunbathing, but the water is clear and cool for swimming. There is a massage stand here as well, and some tables in the shade if you need a break from the sun. We noticed a bit of trash on the beach here and there, but not enough to detract from our experience. We recommend visiting Koh Phangan’s Zen Beach in the morning or for sunset.
Mae Haad (note – haad is Thai for beach) is one of the best beaches in Koh Phangan for kids and families. With a full service restaurant and a nice flat beach that stretches far into the distance, there is plenty of space to run and play here. The water has an easy, gradual drop-off and a cooler than average (read, gratefully more refreshing) temperature. Plus, Mae Haad and Ko Ma, a tiny island attached to Mae Haad by a sand bridge during low tide, are two of the best places in Koh Phangan for snorkeling, so it’s got built-in activities to keep the little ones occupied. Meanwhile, off-duty parents can enjoy one of several massage stands along the beach. Be warned that the sand bridge to Ko Ma is more of a “tiny rock” bridge, so swim shoes are recommended.
This tiny Koh Phangan, Thailand beach isn’t pinned on Google Maps, but it was one of the most beautiful ones we saw during our trip. Attached to The Wave Sunset Restaurant and Bar, this beach sits in a tiny cove surrounded by rock formations that make it feel secluded and intimate. The beach is fully serviced by the restaurant and also offers some chaise lounges to improve your sunbathing experience. As an added bonus, we enjoyed one of our best meals on the island hee, so you’re sure to eat well during your visit. Come here for lunch or an early dinner and enjoy a nearly-private sunset – when we visited, there were less than 10 people at the beach.
Tong Sala Beach is a longer stretch of beach south of the Thongsala pier that is home to Sabaii Bay Beach Club. Sabaii is one of the island’s main party venues, but on an off-night the beach is clean and quiet. Here, we enjoyed the most beautiful sunset of our lives – truly, we were speechless. What makes the Koh Phangan sunset here so magical is the spit of sandbars that become visible during low tide, creating a dynamic visual and beautiful ripples in the water that dramatically enhance the light and reflections (check out the cover shot of this post to see for yourself). Come on a party-free night and settle into the comfy beach bean chairs with dinner and a cocktail to enjoy the view. Prepare to be amazed.
Koh Phangan Beaches You Can Skip
Not every beach can be as picture perfect as Zen Beach and Secret Beach. Here are our top two Koh Phangan, Thailand beaches you can skip.
Salad Beach is a frequent appearance on other “top beaches” list, but in our opinion, it’s nothing to write home about. While it’s nice and wide and has all the amenities you might want, there’s no “wow” factor to it. It’s too big to feel intimate, and no stunning visuals to soak in while you sunbathe. It just feels like a standard, solid beach you could find in a lot of locations. Plus, getting there takes confidence on a scooter, as the road to the beach is on a steep decline – we chose to park on the main road and walk down rather than risk it. In short, there’s nothing wrong with this Koh Phangan, Thailand beach per se, but you won’t be reminiscing about it in your old age either.
Home to the world-famous Full Moon Party, Haad Rin is a hard pass for us. Having experienced the Full Moon Party ourselves (learn more in our Koh Phangan travel guide here), let’s just say we’ve seen too much. This beach gets absolutely TRASHED after the party, and while there are solid clean-up efforts that take place, I still wouldn’t trust it. Bars serve beer in glass bottles, there are a lot of drugs being used, and unfortunately (aka scarred into our memories), drunk people don’t always want to pay the bathroom fees – regardless of their type of need. With so many other stunning Koh Phangan, Thailand beaches to choose from, just leave this one to the partiers.
FAQs for Koh Phangan, Thailand Beaches
When is the Best Time to Visit Koh Phangan, Thailand?
Koh Phangan enjoys pleasant weather most of the year, though it does experience a rainy season from mid-September to mid-December. Peak season is between December and April, with January and February being especially busy months for the Full Moon Party. If you’re looking for a quieter ambiance and cheaper accommodations, try booking between May and August.
Pro tip: Whether you’re trying to attend (or avoid) the Full Moon Party, make sure to check the dates in advance of your trip. The island will be much busier – and room rates much higher – during the days leading up to and immediately following the party.
How Do I Get to Koh Phangan?
To be honest, getting to Koh Phangan is a bit tricky. Do I Need to Speak Thai to Visit Koh Phangan's Beaches?
Definitely not. We had no issues interacting with people in the service industry in English during our 4 months in Thailand, though knowing a few key words will definitely win you some brownie points with the locals. Practice these ones before your trip:
- Hello/Goodbye – sawasdee – sa-wat-DEE
- Please – karuna – gah-roo-NAH
- Thank you – khob khun – kop KOON
To be polite, it’s important to speak slowly and add male/female particles to your phrases. Use khrap – khrap if you’re male and kha – kah if you’re female. For example, as a woman, I would say hello as sawasdee kha – sa-wat-DEE kah. Additionally, a bow with your palms together called a wai when saying hello shows respect. The higher your hands, the more respect you show.
