You also cannot miss dinner at Aifur, one of the most iconic – and entertaining – restaurants in all of Stockholm.
Thanks to its premium location, Gamla stan is one of the best neighborhoods in Stockholm for first-time visitors who are short on time. Our personal favorite place to stay in Stockholm is Södermalm, the trendy neighborhood located on an island just south of Gamla stan. Södermalm is home to the hipsters of Stockholm, with lots of unique bars and restaurants, vintage shops, and cute cafes. Fittingly, it’s also home to the iconic Fotografiska Museet, a world-class photography museum.
Södermalm is divided into several smaller districts, the key ones being SoFo, Hornstull, and Rosendal. SoFo is in the center of the island, and our top pick of where to stay in Stockholm after living here for 4 weeks. It’s best for foodies and shoppers. Hornstull is in the northwest corner of the island and is best for nightlife lovers, while Rosendal is known for its cute park and transit convenience.
In addition to having top-tier bars and restaurants, Södermalm also has a great backpacker-friendly vibe. It’s one of the few neighborhoods in Stockholm where you can find affordable hostels, so it’s also ideal for budget travelers.

In our opinion, Gamla stan is one of the best areas to stay in Stockholm for first-time visitors. It’s a picturesque neighborhood, and you’ll be closest to the city’s top attractions. The area is highly walkable, and since it’s home to some of Stockholm’s best restaurants and bars as well, you could spend most of your visit to Stockholm without even leaving Gamla stan.
But, after living here for 4 weeks, we’d be remiss not to mention Södermalm as another great option. It’s better for a more “locals” experience, and you can still easily access the city’s sights by metro.
Where is the Best Neighborhood to Stay in Stockholm for Nightlife?
Hands down the best neighborhood to stay in Stockholm for nightlife is Södermalm, particularly in the Hornstull area in the northwest corner of the island. Here you’ll find possibly the most popular bar in Stockholm, Tjoget, along with several other great bars and restaurants to make a night of it.
Where is the Best Neighborhood to Stay in Stockholm on a Budget?
The winner for best Stockholm neighborhood on a budget is, once again, backpacker-friendly Södermalm. It’s one of the only top neighborhoods in Stockholm where you may be able to save a few bucks on your hotel, but it’s still Stockholm, so don’t expect a $10 hostel bed. Alternatively, you can look a bit further outside of the city center for your lodging, but expect longer transit times.
How Many Days Should I Stay in Stockholm?
We recommend 3 days in Stockholm to hit the major attractions and still have a little time to rest and relax. If you’re anything like us though, you won’t want to leave! Don’t hesitate to add a couple of extra days to expand your trip with some more off-the-beaten path adventures.
