Why Ride the Chamonix to Mont Blanc Cable Car?
The Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car is one of the most famous cable cars in the world. In operation since 1955, it now receives nearly half a million visitors each year. It holds the record for the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, stretching from the departure point in Chamonix village at 1,035 m above sea level (3,396 ft) to the Aiguille du Midi station at 3,777 m (12,392 ft). Upon arrival at Aiguille du Midi, you can ascend even further to the station’s peak at 3,842 m (12,605 ft) via elevator. It’s the closest you can get to the Mont Blanc summit without hiking or climbing, and at this impressive height, you’ll get breathtaking, 360° views of the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps. On a clear day, you can even see the Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa, and the Grand Combin!
Fun fact: Aiguille du Midi translates literally to the “Needle at Mid-day.” It has this name due to the fact that, when viewed from the church in town, the sun passes over its peak at exactly noon.
In the summer, a visit to Aiguille du Midi is even better, as you also have the option to ride the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car, which stretches from the Aiguille du Midi station across the Italian border to Pointe Helbronner. Also called the Vallée Blanche cable car, the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car offers incredible views of Mont Blanc and the Mer de Glace glacier. From the comfort of your four-seat car, you can watch groups of mountaineers traverse the glacier’s crevasses and seracs while admiring the incredible mountain peaks covered in snow and ice. It’s a truly unforgettable experience from start to finish, and well worth a spot on your Chamonix itinerary.
Logistics - How to Get There and Purchasing Your Tickets
Arrival to the Station and Boarding Process
The Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car departs from downtown Chamonix, easy to get to due to its central location. If you’re staying in Chamonix, it’s likely walkable, though there is street and paid parking close by as well. If you’re staying in a nearby village and taking the SNCF train, arrive at the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc station and from there it’s a nine minute walk.
After you’ve reached the cable car station, you’ll need to wait outside until your scheduled departure time. There’s a large electronic sign out front that displays the current departure number – watch this until it matches the number on your ticket, then head up to the queue to show your ticket and wait to enter the car (another 10-15 minutes). Note – you are not allowed to board the Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car without a scheduled reservation. In peak season, we recommend reserving your tickets at least two days in advance due to the attraction’s popularity and limited number of daily departures. You’ll want to balance your desire to guarantee the departure date and time you want against waiting as long as possible to gauge the weather. Though visiting Aiguille du Midi is always a worthwhile experience, it’s a far richer one if you travel on a clear day.
Pro tip: The clouds tend to roll in more in the afternoon, so we recommend booking as early of a reservation time as you can manage to maximize your chance of sunny weather and unimpeded views. Hours vary during the season, but ascent departures begin as early as 6:10 am with final descent departures as late as 4:30 pm – check the schedule here.
The Chamonix to Mont Blanc Cable Car Ride
Once onboard the cable car, you’ll begin your journey with a stop at the Plan de l’Aiguille station at 2,317 m (7,602 ft). At this station you’ll find a lovely refuge and restaurant, as well as the starting point for the popular Grand Balcon Nord hike to Montenvers, home of the stunning Grotte de Glace ice cave (learn more here). Feel free to stop for a few photos, or move directly to the next cable car.
From Plan de l’Aiguille, you’ll board a second cable car that will take you the rest of the way up to Aiguille du Midi. Upon arrival, you’ll be given an exit number that will guide your departure time, but don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time to see everything. This process just helps to keep things running smoothly so the departure line doesn’t get too backed up, which you’ll definitely appreciate later.
Purchasing Tickets
Summer 2025 round-trip tickets for the Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car have a standard price of 81 EUR (~$92), though you can save as much as 21 EUR (~$24) if you book in advance – check rates here. Discounted rates are also available for children aged 5-14 (standard price of 69 EUR or ~$78) and are free for kids under 5, though a visit is not recommended for the very young or elderly (more on this below). They also sell family passes for 251 EUR (~$285), which include two adult and two child tickets, a savings of about 50 EUR (~$67) at the standard price.

Travel Tips - Preparing for Your Visit
Some important things to consider for your visit to Aiguille du Midi:
- Health and Safety – we don’t recommend riding the Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car if you’re very young, elderly, or suffer from health conditions like vertigo or heart problems. Aiguille du Midi sits at a very high elevation. The risk of altitude sickness is real, and there’s no quick exit if you start feeling ill. I suffered with this myself, and the wait for the gondola down was rough – even sitting perfectly still, my heartbeat was racing at 115 bpm.
- Weather – a sunny day is key to getting the most of your visit. Try to book your tickets only a few days out, and aim for the morning for the best chance at clear skies. Due to elevation, it will be much colder at the peak, so make sure to pack warm layers, even if it’s a hot day at the base.
- Sun Protection – high altitude and reflections off the snow mean increased UV ray intensity. Make sure to wear sunscreen and bring sunglasses or a hat.
- Passport – if you plan to ride the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car to Pointe Helbronner (which you definitely should), make sure to bring your passport with you, as you’ll be crossing the border to Italy. They don’t always check, but better safe than sorry.
- Water and Snacks – the wait times for gondolas can get long, and having some snacks on hand can go a long way to making your day more comfortable. We would’ve killed for a bag of nuts while waiting in line at Pointe Helbronner for our return to Aiguille du Midi!
- Camera – don’t forget your most important tool of the day!
- Leave Fido at home – no dogs allowed on this journey.
Attractions at Aiguille du Midi
There are several attractions to explore once you reach the peak at Aiguille du Midi. We’ve got a brief overview here to help you plan your visit.
Panoramic Mont Blanc Cable Car
The top attraction once you’ve exited the Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car is to hop right on another one – the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car. This incredible cable car is one of the longest in the world at 5 km (3.1 miles), and stretches between the peaks of Aiguille du Midi in France and Pointe Helbronner in Italy. During the 50 minute round-trip journey, you’ll pass across the Vallée Blanche between them, a snowy glacier valley marked with crevasses, seracs, and roped groups of mountaineers trekking across the ice. Your comfy four-seat gondola will have windows on all sides for you to admire the snowy peaks of the Mont Blanc massif and surrounding Alps. And with so many jaw-dropping views to soak in along the way, you’ll be in Italy before you know it.
Once at Point Helbronner, you’ll have time to step out and enjoy the viewing terraces at the station or grab a bite to eat before heading back. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous – and a touch rebellious – you can even follow the people flouting the security fence and “Danger” signs down the steel-grate steps that lead out onto the glacier itself. There’s no guarantee of safety here, so you’ll need to be careful, but you can’t beat the thrill of standing on the incredible glacier with your own two feet.
After you’ve gotten your fill of Italy, hop in line for the return trip to Aiguille du Midi. The wait can be pretty long – over an hour and fifteen minutes when we visited – so make sure you don’t do it on an empty stomach. Tickets for the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car are 41 EUR (~$47) and are purchased onsite once you’ve reached Aiguille du Midi – no advanced reservation needed.
Espace Vertical
Back at Aiguille due Midi, stop by Espace Vertical, the highest museum on mountaineering ever built. It’s a small exhibit where you can learn some fun facts about alpinism and the dangerous feats mountaineers have accomplished on Mont Blanc and the surrounding peaks. Access to the exhibit is included in your ticket.
Palier Hypoxie
The Hypoxia Level is another small exhibit that discusses the impact of oxygen depletion on the body at altitude. Hypoxia can begin to impact the body at around 3,000 m (9,843 ft), so this exhibit becomes particularly relevant as you may be experiencing some of the symptoms it describes yourself, as the exhibit is located at around 3,800 m (12,467 ft). Access to this exhibit is also included in your ticket.
Step Into the Void!
Step Into the Void offers the chance to add a little adrenaline to your day. This box, extended out from the station with over 1,000 m (3,280 ft) of empty space beneath it, is made out of glass on five sides, giving you an unimpeded – and heart-pumping – view of the mountains and the valley below. Access to this attraction is included in your ticket, but often comes with a long line. The wait was over an hour when we visited, so we decided to skip it.
Espace Mont Blanc
Perfect for a cold day, Espace Mont Blanc is an enclosed room with large picture windows offering you all the amazing views away from the bite of the mountain air. There is also a bathroom located here, so it makes for a handy pit stop. Access to this space is included in your ticket as well.
Le Tube
Less of an attraction and more of a method of transit, Le Tube is a 32 m (105 ft) steel pipe that connects the main station to more viewing terraces. You can also read some educational placards along the length of the path. Access to Le Tube is included in your ticket.
Espace Histoire
Espace Histoire is a small exhibit on the history of the Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car, along with a view of some of the impressive machinery that make running it possible. You’ll pass through this automatically on your way out of the station once you’ve finished your visit to Aiguille du Midi. This exhibit is also included in your ticket.
Enjoy the View
There are several viewing terraces scattered across the station at different heights, offering you every photo angle you could wish for. Stroll through Aiguille du Midi to discover them all, and take you time to stop and soak it all in.
Aiguille du Midi 4D Cinema
Located at the departure station at the base of the Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car, this 4D cinema shows a 12 minute film every 30 minutes called “Bird of the Summits.” It’s a fun and different way to experience the mountains that is especially enjoyable for the kiddos. Tickets for the 4D cinema are 9.5 EUR (~$11) for adults and 8.1 EUR (~$9) for kids and seniors, but you get a 10% discount with your Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car ticket. Or, if you’ve bought the Mont Blanc Multipass, tickets for the 4D cinema are included for free.
Dining
There are three dining options at Aiguille du Midi, as well as one option at Pointe Helbronner:
Aiguille du Midi – all of the dining options are located on the upper terrace of the main station:
- Restaurant le 3842 – if you’re feeling fancy, this is the spot for you. This gourmet restaurant features panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling windows that you can admire while tucked into the warmth of the plush dining room. Expect to pay at least 50 EUR (~$67) per person here, but the high price tag comes with delicious, seasonally curated dishes you can enjoy in style.
- Le 3842 quick-serve – attached to Restaurant le 3842 on the outer terrace, this quick-serve option sells baguette sandwiches and waffles. While simple, the sandwiches were delicious, and the price was perfect. We paid about 36 EUR (~$41) for two sandwiches, a waffle, and a couple of beers.
- Cafeteria le Summit 3842 – another inside option, the cafeteria offers a fairly wide array of hot and cold dishes at affordable prices. It’s nothing fancy – think hot dogs and hamburgers – but it will fill the hole and get you out of the cold for a fraction of the price of Restaurant le 3842.
Pointe Helbronner:
- Kartell Panoramic Bistro – if you need a bite to eat during your Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car journey, there is also a restaurant at Pointe Helbronner. The highest café in Italy, they serve a mix of French Savoyard and Italian cuisine at a moderate price point of 15 to 20 EUR (~$17 to $23) per plate.
Recommended Itinerary
To make your day as seamless as possible, we suggest the following itinerary:
- Ascent – hop on the Chamonix to Mont Blanc cable car and proceed directly to Aiguille du Midi. You can grab some photos at Plan de l’Aiguille on the way down.
- Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car – we recommend starting with this for the best chance at clear skies and a short wait. In addition, it’s the most time-consuming attraction at Aiguille du Midi, so doing it first will make sure you don’t run out of time for it.
- Step Into the Void! – similar to our advice for the Panoramic Mont Blanc cable car, if you’re interested in this attraction, we recommend you make time for it early in your visit to try to minimize the wait time.
- Lunch – grab a quick bite at Le 3842 quick-serve or the cafeteria.
- Espace Vertical – a quick stop nearby to learn about mountaineering.
- Espace Mont Blanc – warm up and enjoy the views on the way to the Palier Hypoxie.
- Palier Hypoxie – learn all about how the altitude is messing with your body and why those stairs feel so difficult!
- Le Tube – walk through to the final viewing platforms, then follow the path back to the main station.
- Espace Histoire – make your wait for a departure gondola more enjoyable by checking out this exhibit located in and around the exit line.
- Descent – stop at Plan de l’Aiguille for a few minutes for photos, or even grab a beer at the refuge to enjoy the views at a lower elevation.
- Aiguille du Midi 4D Cinema – upon returning to the departure station at the base, feel free to visit the 4D cinema if you’re up for a bit more fun. If not, head into town and enjoy the rest of your day in Chamonix!
